Google today announced the Experience Update Page and with this Google is no longer requiring AMP on mobile to share Top Stories in Google search. This won’t happen until 2021, but it’s important to note that the on-page experience will be important in defining what’s in the Top Stories section. What’s going on in today’s popular story? In 2016, Google said that only AMP pages could appear in Google’s version of Search’s most popular stories. Recently, Google allowed local news providers for COVID-19-related stories to pass this requirement. When this on -page experience goes live in 2021, Google will no longer require AMP to share news stories. AMPs can and will continue to be featured in the Google Top Stories section after this update. Google wrote that "when we publish an update to the experience rank on the page, the Top Stories experience requirements will also be updated.
